How to Place a Label

The process to place a label using different methods is explained below.

Placing a Label

  1. From the Drawing Production tab, select Civil Labeler.
  2. Select a label from the left side of the dialog.
  3. For most labels you can ignore the rest of the dialog.
  4. Click Place and follow the prompts to place the label. The prompts are custom and defined as part of the label.
Tip: Enabling the 'Collapse Mode' by selecting the icon in the lower right corner will cause the Civil Labeler dialog to collapse after clicking the Place button. Right-click to recall the dialog.

Placing a Label with a Different Rotation, Leader, or Frame

When a label needs to be placed with a different rotation, leader, or frame than defined in the standard those settings can be easily overridden at placement.

  1. From the Drawing Production tab, select Civil Labeler.
  2. Select a label from the left side of the dialog.
  3. Set the desired Rotation and Border Frame from the many options available. Offset defines the gap between the text to the border frame.

  4. Set the Leader Location to the points around the label (and border frame if one exists) where the leader can attach or to None if no leader is required. There are eight attachment points at the corners and centers of each side as shown in the figure below.

    Eight Attachments

The extension defines a fixed-length segment between the leader and the label. Set to 0 for no fixed length segment.

Lock Perpendicular causes the label to be located perpendicular to the element being labeled. The text justification determines the point on the label that is perpendicular to the element.

  5. Optionally, a horizontal line can be included in the label by selecting a Text Divider.
  6. Click Place and follow the prompts to place the label.
Note: Changes to these settings during placement are not written to the label definition in the workspace. When next time the Civil Labeler dialog is opened, and a label selected, the values in the dialog will return to the standard defined in the label definition.

Placing a Label with a Symbology or Text Overrides

When a label needs to be placed with a symbology or text settings the override options are used.

Placing Label with Symbology or Text Override

  1. From the Drawing Production tab, select Civil Labeler.
  2. Select a label from the left side of the dialog.
  3. Override the Element Template, Dimension Style, or Text Style as desired. The override can be selected from the pick list, or the Use Active check box enabled to use the active definition.
Note: See the Composition of a Civil Label section for details of what is stored in Element Template, Dimension Styles, and Text Styles. Not all settings are used by civil labels.
  4. Click Place and follow the prompts to place the label.
Note: Changes to these settings during placement are not written to the label definition in the workspace. When next time the Civil Labeler dialog is opened, and a label selected, the values in the dialog will return to the standard defined in the label definition.
